Falling for Fall: Décor Must-Haves

“Another fall, another turned page…” - Wallace Stegner
Growing up I always loved summertime since my birthday is in August. Growing older has taught me to appreciate the fall season. Autumn used to signal the start of the school year for me as a kid, which wasn’t exactly that exciting. Now, I can appreciate the symbolic change the season offers. As the leaves change colors and animals prepare for the cold winter months, it truly is the most magical time of the year.
Like animals, we also begin to prepare our homes for colder temps and the holiday season that lies ahead. We pull out warm cozy blankets and throws. Purchase all of the wonderful fall décor that floods stores like HomeGoods, Kirkland’s, and Pottery Barn each season. Oh and don’t forget the front entryways, they are filled to the brim with mums and pumpkins galore! Pick and choose what fall décor pieces call your name but some items are must-haves. Read on to see what basics are my fall must-haves.
Fall Must-Haves
Festive Door Mat

What is a better way to make your guests feel welcome than with a festive fall door mat!? These mats start popping up everywhere at the start of the season. They feature endearing sayings like, “Hey there Pumpkin” or “Welcome Fall”. You can even show off your sense of humor. I once saw a mat that read, “No Entry For Basic Witches”!
Tip: Make sure you choose a mat that is the right size for your entryway. Take measurements of the space before you buy.
Pumpkins, Pinecones, and Acorns

Pumpkins, pinecones, and acorns oh my! Utilizing faux outdoor décor is a great way to bring the outside inside. Not only does it help set the mood for the season, it’s also an easy no fuss way to decorate. You can go for real or faux here too. Luckily these items tend to last for awhile even when they are real. Find some vases or baskets that speak to you and dump some pinecones and acorns in there! Pumpkins are also very easy to add to the mix and there are varying sizes to choose from. Everything pictured above (except the faux wheat) is from Target!
Tip: If you choose faux make sure they do not look it. Just because they’re fake doesn’t mean that everyone has to know 😉
Fall Scented Candles

Scented anything is my most favorite! This is another way to ready yourself and home for the fall season. From Crisp Fall Night to Thanksgiving Dinner scented candles, there are endless scents to choose from. Lighting your favorite candle scent can also have a positive effect on your mood. I talk more about this in The Power of Scent in Your Home and even more about how scents from nature can benefit our health in Floral Oasis: The Benefits Of Having Fresh Flowers In Your Home.
Tip: Smell your candles before you purchase them. Simple tip but so important. Also don’t break the bank unless you want to. Both candles pictured above are from IKEA for $1.49 each. They’re long-lasting and smell amazing!
Comfy Throws and Blankets

Honestly, I’m always cold so there’s always a throw on deck at my house! However, this is the time of year when most folks start looking for a throw or blanket to snuggle up under while they watch their favorite movie. If you’re in need of a new throw then you’re in luck! HomeGoods has a ton of throws available in any color you can think of this time of year. From dependable gray to the seasonal mustard color that is so popular and everything else in between.
Tip: Throws make for the ultimate self-care moment. Check out four other ways you can set your home up for self-care in 5 Ways to Set Your Home Up for Self-Care Moments.
Give Thanks Wall Décor

Having an attitude of gratitude is always a good idea, but this time of year giving thanks is even more important as we prepare to start a new year. Having a reminder to give thanks not only helps to cultivate a peaceful home but is festive as well. There are so many varieties of Give Thanks décor so there is definitely something for everyone’s taste. You can hang a sign up on the wall or sit a plaque on the mantel over the fire place like I did.
Tip: Try purchasing a custom made sign on Etsy to give your décor a personal touch.
