Let’s face it, self-care is a big deal these days and rightfully so. Life places so many demands on us that we sometimes forget to take care of our own needs. Setting up spaces in the home that make it easier to engage in self-care is a must. Not only will these spaces be a reminder to actually do it but having certain areas and items readily available can take the stress out of the whole process of setting up an impromptu self-care session.

Equipping your home with things that transform it into a more comfortable place beats spending tons of money on a weekend getaway or spa day. You should definitely still do those things when you can but you will thank yourself when you come home after a long day at work and all you want to do is dive straight into some me time.

Dimmers are the fastest way to set the tone for rest and relaxation. As soon as you turn down the light your mind follows suit and instantly begins to relax. It also beats having to light candles or finding a lamp that meets your needs. They’re not difficult to install either. Choose colors that compliment your decor instead of the traditional white knob to mix it up. Get one and turn down quickly!

Throws

Who doesn’t have at least one throw on their couch. They are not only for keeping warm but you can also cuddle up underneath one if you need a moment to escape from it all. Invest in a few more throws to strategically place around your home to encourage other family members to engage in a little down time. They come in all kinds of colors and varieties so have fun with it!

Tons of Pillows

Pillows and throws go together like apple pie and ice cream! Luckily they come in all shapes and sizes that allow for a myriad of set ups in any given space. Do you want floor pillows, for example? Did you know that was a thing? Take a look at the 7 Best Floor Pillows of 2020 from the Spruce if that is your thing. Take the time to put some thought into how many you want, the sizes, and firmness of the pillows. Most importantly, think about what function the pillow will serve. You will be so thankful that you did when it’s time to lay down and relax! Don’t forget to have fun with the colors and textures too.

Lounge Chair / Chaise

So you’ve got some pillows and throws - how about a comfy chair to lay on? You could always lay on the couch but if you can invest in a lounge chair for one, that’s even better. Having a separate chair set up for down-time is a constant reminder to sit (or lay) down and clear your mind. Place one in any area of the home where you think it may come in handy.

Aromatherapy

Scents have a way of taking you on a mental vacation if you let them. Aromatherapy is often associated with self-care because of its health benefits. According to healthline aromatherapy is a holistic healing treatment that uses natural plant extracts to promote health and well-being. Classic aromatherapy utilizes our sense of smell and skin to provide psychological and physical betterment. Essential oil diffusers are one of the most common mechanisms used to practice aromatherapy. The essential oil of choice is released into the air which is then inhaled and absorbed into the body. Aromatherapy can aid in pain management, stress reduction, and improved quality of sleep to name a few.
